Why New Zealand and Not Uganda?

worldOn Monday I shared with you the exciting news about my soon coming missions trip to New Zealand.  I am greatly looking forward to the trip and to seeing what ministry doors the Lord opens up along the way but I’ve gotten a few semi- negative responses upon hearing about the trip such as:

“New Zealand?  They don’t need you guys (presumable Christians) over there!  They have plenty of money in New Zealand.  Go to Uganda where the poor people are.  They’re the ones that need you!”

After I got over the initial surprise I began to think critically about the question:

Why New Zealand and not Uganda?

Why would we even bother to pick up and go across the world for 5.5 weeks to people who speak English and by worldly standards are “rich”?  Why do THEY need us?

Well, the truth is they don’t need us and neither do the people in Uganda.  They need Christ not primarily our money because it’s not about the money, it’s not about lack of education, it’s not even about starving children.  It’s about Jesus and His saving Gospel.

Should those who are in the Gospel be attending to the poor and needy in our world?  Yes, absolutely!  If you name the name of Christ but have no concern for these who are hurting among us, I would question if you really are in Christ because the fruit of the Spirit is love and kindness.  We DO need to care for the sick and hungry.  We DO need to show them Christ’s love not only through our words but through our actions but we can’t forget that the people of America, Britain, Astralia, France, New Zealand and the like.  They need Christ just as much as the impoverished child in Uganda.

Poorness of soul is unequivocally poorer than poorness of means because material wealth or lack thereof will end at our last breath but wealth or poverty of soul will live eternally on.

We should not neglect the material needs of the world but let us be careful not to turn missions into merely feel-good clean water and new shoes operations.  Are these things needed?  Yes!  But the need for the Gospel and encouragement in faith is far greater.  This need stretches farther than just the poor in Africa.  It reaches to every corner of the earth, America and New Zealand included.

So, why New Zealand and not Uganda?

Because both places need Christ and the encouragement of fellow believers but New Zealand is where God has opened the door for me and my family to serve at this time.

God has called all Christians to use their spiritual gifts to build up the body of Christ and further the Gospel.  We should not discriminate between those who He has called to serve in deepest Africa or those He has called to serve in New Zealand or the US.

“And he said unto them, Go ye into ALL the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”  -Mark 16:15

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”  -Acts 1:8

A Missions Trip, My First Music Album & YOU!

Sweet Hymns ad#1Hi all!  I have something wonderful to tell you!   In just 2 short weeks I will be starting out on a 5 1/2 week missions trip to the country of New Zealand!

I will be going along with my grandparents and brother to help minister to a church while their pastor/missionary and his wife come back to the states for a few weeks.  My grandfather will be taking on the pastoral duties and we will be serving the church in other ways.

We will find out some additional ministery opportunities when we get there but here are a few specific things we plan to accomplish while in New Zealand:

  • I will be sharing the Gospel through my salvation testimony.
  • We will be teaching young children Bible lessons.
  • My brother Tyler and I will be ministering in song for a few different groups of people.
  • I will be giving away free copies of my new ebook “Single Girl” to the women and young ladies.
  • I will have the opportunity to personally deliver some of the many scarves from the Knit Together in Love project!!!

I am thrilled at God’s timing and direction for this trip.  I am also very happy that there will not be a language barrier.  This will make it much easier to serve and open up many additional opportunities for us.

My plan will be to keep you updated as time allows (or rather as we have internet connection haha) with pictures and reports about giving out the scarves and the other aspects of our missions trip.

Ways YOU can help!

1.)  Pray

We can’t foresee and prepare ahead of time for every opportunity or difficulty that may arise so prayers for wisdom, boldness, guidance and safety would be much appreciated.

2.)  Support

Trips like this are very expensive and while I have full confidence that the Lord will provide all of our needs if you would like to help support this trip here are a few ways you could consider:

#1  Download my new Sweet Hymns Album!

I’ve just recorded my first ever music album!!!  A few weeks back I worked with a guy from our church on creating an album with 9 of my favorite hymns.  The music is simple, just my voice and my brother Tyler’s guitar.  We aren’t professionals but it was fun to record and I hope you will enjoy it.  I love singing, and recording an album has been a dream of mine for many years.

You can download an instant copy of my Sweet Hymns album below.  There is not a set price for the MP3 album.  You can edit the price and decide how much you would like to put towards the music.  The money will be a great help in preparing for this missions trip!

Secret Tip: Saving on New Shoes

target shoes2I love shoes but I don’t like to spend a lot of money.  Recently I found a cool, new tip for getting a good deal on shoes!

I was shopping a few months back and I was unable to find a pair of flats that I liked and that were in my price range.  I was scanning the women’s shoe rack  to no avail.  I happened to turn around to glance at the girl’s shoe department.  There, I was surprised to find the shoes I had been looking for and they were only about $6!  The only problem was that I wear a sie 7.5 women’s and wouldn’t be able to fit into the girl sized shoe…. or would I?

I  decided to give it a shot and that’s when I made my big discovery.  Size 4.5-5 girls is actually the equivalent of a women’s size 7-7.5!  This opened a whole new world of options up to me!

Many times girls flats, sneakers and sandals look nearly identical to woman’s shoes only the sizing is written differently and the prices are usually a good bit lower.

Now when I go shoe shopping I look in the both the women’s and girl’s section.  Sure you’ve got to weed through a few pairs of obviously girly shoes with sparkles and butterflies but you can often find some good “grown up” looking pairs.

I realize that this tip won’t work for everyone as girl’s shoes typically only go tup to size 6 (the equivalent of probably a women’s size 8-8.5 depending on the shoe) but I thought I share it any way.

Here is a picture of the new sneakers I bought at target the other day.  The two shoes are the same brand and style with the only difference being a slightly different coloring.  I chose the shoes from the girl’s section and saved around $10 without even using a sale or coupon!

What do you think?  Could this money saving tip work for you?

National Day of Prayer Printable Prayer Target List

In 1952 our country declared the first National Day of Prayer.  The National Day of Prayer is held the first Thursday of every May and is a time set to encourage the American people to petition the Lord in prayer.

While it saddens my heart to think of where our nation as a whole is spiritually, I rejoice that we still have this freedom and a formal encouragement even from our liberal leaders to go before the Lord in prayer.  While I am greatly disappointed in our current leadership you may be interested to read what President Obama said in these his 2011, 2012 and 2013 calls to prayer.

While President Obama’s “calls” to prayer are distinctly ”politically correct” and do lack theological soundness, at times I was a bit surprised at the decentness of his formal proclamation.  Surely other countries do not even have this amount of religious openness.

As Christians we should not wait only for this time of year to go before the Lord in prayer but let this be a special reminder and a day to encourage others to seek God’s face.

Below I’ve created a FREE printable prayer target list to help bring to mind the many things we have to pray for.  Please feel free to use this for your own personal use, to pass out to others or use to lead a prayer group.

4 Valuable {easy} Bible Study Tips

biblesI’d like to share with you four of my favorite Bible study tips.  We should always be learning and growing in the Truth and these are a few things that I have found to be helpful.

Read Multiple Versions

I am not a Greek or Hebrew scholar so reading the Scripture in the original language is not an option for me.  I do know that these languages have more descriptive words than the English language, therefore sometimes a word could be translated with several different English words and still be correct.  Reading different versions helps me get a fuller picture of what the Original really meant.

Something to keep in mind though is that not every translation/version is the best (they are translations after all).  Try to pick accurate versions that stay close to the original text.

The KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV, HCSB are all literal translations and those who do know how to read the original language tell me they are very solid, accurate choices.

Some other versions aren’t necessarily wrong but some are paraphrases or general thoughts instead of detailed translations.  These can be good for getting a broad brush stroke but I wouldn’t say they are the best for deep study.

Read the Same Book Multiple Times

Reading the same book or same passage over and over again has been SO helpful to me!  Sometimes I miss things on the first go around and I learn more after reading the book five or six times.  This also helps me internalize the Truth better and I find myself meditating on the book and remembering to apply it to everyday life more easily.

Often times I will read the same book or passage in each of the versions I mentioned above.  Never think there is a big rush to read through the Bible.  Take your time and dig down deep.

Read Multiple Commentaries

Again, I’m not a scholar so I like to hear what other wise people have said about the Text, people who have studied the time period and culture as well as the original language.  Different commentaries have different perspectives or word things in unique ways.  You can really learn a lot by comparing commentaries. You can find many free commentaries online.  I highly recommend John MacArthur’s commentary and study Bible.

Just be careful that the commentaries you are choosing have a solid Biblical foundation.  There are many false teachers out there.  Also, keep in mind that even the best theologian is not perfect.  Make sure to lay everything against the Word of God to see if it is true.

Talk About What You Learned Multiple Times

After reading a book or passage multiple times I naturally begin to see how it applies to my life and the lives of others.  When I see these principles I try to share what I’m learning with others.  Sometimes this is in a conversation with a friend, in a letter of encouragement or in a blog post.  When I verbalize or write out what I’m learning I find it sticks with me better and I continue to meditate on it for a longer period of time.

There are so many good Bible study tips and I didn’t even begin to mention them all but I hope these were helpful to you.  I know they have been very beneficial to me.

What is your favorite Bible study tip?

“Haven’t Even Kissed” Song Review

The other day I received an email from a reader suggesting that I take a look at a beautiful song from Moriah Peters’ almum “I Choose Jesus”.

She had read my post “Should You Kiss Before You’re Married?” and thought I might want to hear it.

I enjoyed the sound of the music and I LOVED that the lyrics promote saving your first kiss.  Rarely can you find a love song that encourages purity and patience.  I think this song is a real gem!

I really don’t know that much about Moriah but what I’ve heard I’ve been impressed with.  Her music is on the lighter side but it still contains some good notions and I absolutely love her voice and music style.  You can take a look at Moriah’s website here and watch her testimony here.

I hope you enjoy the song!

Coconut Oil Hair Treatment

coconutThis week I tried out a new hair experiment, a coconut oil hair mask!

Coconut oil does 3 things for your hair:

1.) Promotes hair growth

Studies show that coconut oil strengthens your hair shafts and encourages hair growth.  Are you a long haired girl?  Want to be a long haired girl?  You might consider using coconut oil for your tresses.

2.) Improves dry scalp

Do you struggle with dry skin?  Using coconut oil can moisturize your scalp and cut down on dandruff.

3.)  Makes hair shine

I can speak from personal experience on this one.  After using the coconut oil treatment the very next day I had someone comment on my shiny hair!

Using coconut oil in your hair is easy!

  • Simply take 1-2 Tbs. of coconut oil and melt it down until it is a warm liquid.  Work the oil into your hair roots, body and ends.
  • Take a shower cap or plastic bag and wrap your head.  The heat from the oil and your head will become trapped and will help with the nurturing process.
  • Let your hair set for about 30min to 1hr.
  • Wash out your hair in a warm shower with your normal shampoo.  I recommend lathering your hair with soap before you hit the water.  The oil should wash out easier this way.  I found that for my long hair I needed to shampoo and rise a couple of time to get all of the oil out.
  • It is recommended that you do this treatment 1-2 times per week for a healthy hair boost.

So what do you think?   Would you give this a try?  I personally was happy with the results, especially the shine!

I’m linked up to:

The Idol of Men {Video}

question in skyI’ve decided to start answering some of the reader questions from this form in video posts!  This is the first time I’ve done something like this so please bare with me!  I’m still learning this video thing and working on being comfortable in front of the camera.

I received a question asking how to overcome the struggle of making an idol out of a man or relationship.  In the video below I tried to give some suggestions as I have struggled in this area myself.

Recap:

When we make something an idol it is because we believe this thing will make us happy, happier than God will.

We need to replace this wrong thinking with right thinking.

As humans we ARE deficient and these deficiencies need to be filled with Christ and His character.  For every deficiency we have there is an atribute of Christ that can fill that need.  Do a study and learn about a part of God’s character that specifically combats the deficiency you are struggling with.

Practical tip:  When you take something bad out you must replace it with something else.  Replace your idol with more knowledge of Christ.   Keep busy creating goals for serving Him and others.  There is a big list of job and ministry ideas in the “Single Girl” ebook if you are interested.

God created women to desire a relationship with a man and in and of it’s self that desire is not bad, we just need to make sure our desire for Christ comes first.

Do you have any additional thoughts or suggestions?  Should I do another video?  Leave a comment!  Do you have a new question to ask?  Submit it to this form.

I’m linked up to:

Unredeemed

Life breaks.  Shatters.  Falls apart.

Lay the pieces before the Lord and know it will not be unredeemed.

I sang this song in church last Sunday.  I love the words, so full of humanity yet pointing to the Redeemer.  May this be an encouragement to you in whatever struggles you may be facing today.

“The cruelest word, the coldest heart

The deepest wound, the endless dark

The lonely ache, the burning tears

The bitter nights, the wasted years

Life breaks and falls apart

But we know these are

Places where grace is soon to be so amazing

It may be unfulfilled, it may be unrestored

But when anything that’s shattered

Is laid before the LordJust watch and see,

it will not be unredeemed

For every choice that led to shame

And all the love that never came

For every vow that someone broke

And every life that gave up hope

We live in the shadow of the fall

But the cross says these are all

Places where grace is soon to be so amazing

It may be unfulfilled, it may be unrestored

But when anything that’s shattered

Is laid before the LordJust watch and see,

it will not be unredeemed

Oh, He will wipe every tear

It will not be, be unredeemed

Places where grace is soon to be so amazing

It may be unfulfilled, it may be unrestored

But you never know the miracle the Father has in store

Just watch and see, it will not be

Just watch and see, it will not be unredeemed”
